Fundamentals of Metallurgy course
If you are looking to improve your (or your team's) understanding of metals, book your place on this metals-specific course. It will take place either on 25 April or 2 May depending on uptake. Please select your preferred date here. Delivered by AMRC, this course will be informative for those new to the scrap metal business and for those looking to refresh their knowledge. The cost to members of attending this course is £250 plus VAT instead of £400. Places are limited so if you are interested in attending, please contact Antonia or click here for more details.

New guidance may assist in classification of LDA
The European Commission has today issued technical guidance on the classification of waste that among other things, provides a way forward on the classification of large domestic appliances (LDA).  Specifically, it implies that the weight of whole appliances could be used when determining waste classification status (‘hazardous’ or ‘non-hazardous’). Click here for more.

GDPR: Pro-forma documents
In the coming days, BMRA will be disseminating a series of pro-forma documents to help members develop their GDPR documentation. These documents, which do not contain legal advice and represent only BMRA’s understanding of the general data protection requirements under GDPR, are only available to members only. As such they will be sent out upon request – please contact Antonia or Lyn. If you would like to speak to someone more widely about GDPR, please call Antonia.

Warning as thieves continue to target scrap yards
Members should be aware that the Association continues to receive reports about thieves targeting scrap metal yards, often coming back on more than one occasion. From scaling perimeter walls to breaking into buildings through skylights or by removing whole sections of brick, the gangs seemingly have little concern about being captured on CCTV. We would strongly urge members to report these incidents to the Secretariat as this will enable us to look for patterns and keep both the police services and the Home Office apprised of the situation. Please email Antonia or call 01480 455249 – all information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Calendar competition – Can you do better?
In recognition that we will be celebrating our 100-year anniversary next year, the 2019 calendar competition’s theme is ‘100 years in Scrap’. We want both old and new photographs that celebrate the industry’s heritage. All the photographs must be landscape in orientation and if they are historic, they will need to be in a good condition. Closing date is 1 October. All entries should be sent to Antonia. Keep an eye out for a poster about the competition that you can put up in your yard!

Calling all past Presidents!
The Secretariat would like to invite all past Presidents of the BMRA, British Secondary Metals Association, British Metals Federation, British Scrap Federation and the National Association of Non-Ferrous Scrap Metal Merchants to an event to unveil its new past-presidents boards. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday 4 July 2018. If you know a past president who may not see this invitation, please do let them know. Please contact Lyn if you can attend.
