NEWS

Report companies demanding cash and cash-paying operators
BMRA is working with BTP to tackle the issue of manufacturing, engineering and plumbing companies, for example, demanding cash for scrap metal. If you have lost business because companies are seeking out cash paying operators, and you are willing to potentially discuss this with BTP, please can you email Antonia or call with more details.

Likewise, if you are aware of cash paying operators, can provide a credible evidence of this, please let her know. BTP is keen to investigate the issue of cash payments for legitimately sourced materials but, as you will understand, is looking for evidence-based reports.

In the meantime, please download and display the attached poster to help to educate and inform those who continue to ask for cash.

China: New Standards published
Chinese Environmental Ministry has published its environmental protection control [GB] standard for imported solid wastes as raw materials, including the following groups:

  • Ferrous

  • Non-ferrous

  • Electric motors

  • Wires and cables

  • Plastics

English translations of the ferrous, non-ferrous and plastics standards can be downloaded from the Bureau of International Recycling’s website.

MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Continuing Competency Training
Following the success of its recent refresher course for technically competent managers, Mayer Environmental is willing to rerun the course for those who were not able to attend this month’s workshop. The course, which is for those whose continuing competence assessment is due for renewal in the coming months, would take place at the BMRA's office in February.

Are you ready for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
As you should be aware, the General Data Protection Regulation comes into effect on 25 May this year. Under the regulation, all business will need to take steps to ensure they are taking the correct steps to protect the personal data they hold on file.

Given the importance of this regulation to its members, BMRA will be repeating a GDPR workshop delivered by Mariel Irvine, a solicitor, qualified data protection practitioner and trusted advisor to the scrap metal industry. Mariel will outline what the law means for the sector and facilitate a discussion about what changes you may need to make to your businesses.

This workshop is FREE for members although it will only go ahead if enough people show interest. If you would like to attend or require further information, please contact Lyn or call 01480 455249.

Metallurgy training course: expressions of interest
BMRA is arranging for AMRC Training Centre to deliver a training course on the fundamentals of metallurgy at a reduced rate for members. This course is an ideal training opportunity for those new to the scrap metal business and for those looking to refresh their knowledge. It covers the following areas:

  • Review of existing knowledge
  • Structure and properties of metals
  • Environmental degradation: oxidation and corrosion
  • The metals lifecycle: Processing of metals
  • Casting and forging
  • Heat treatment
  • Choosing the right metals: Applications of metals

The cost to members of attending this course is £250 plus VAT instead of £400. If you are interested in attending, please contact Antonia. Please note: this course will only go ahead if there is enough interest.
