Legislation being introduced next year will strengthen data protection requirements.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force on 25 May 2018. Its provisions will strengthen the existing data protection laws currently applying in the United Kingdom. This means every scrap metal dealer will be required to “demonstrate compliance” with each of the data protection principles from May next year.

BMRA will aim to provide further information on this topic in the coming weeks in order for you to think about what steps may need to be taken to ensure compliance with the new law. In the meantime, the Information Commissioners Office provides a useful self-assessment tool to help you begin to prepare for the changes. You can access the tool by following this link.
