Do you have contractors on your site?

Can they demonstrate recognised health and safety competence?

CIWM, in collaboration with the BMRA, is making it easier for metal recycling yards and sites to validate the health and safety competency of individuals who visit and work on their sites as contractors.

The MRCCS provides evidence of individual capability and competency, enabling organisations to quickly and easily check that contractors have the required health and safety skills, training, and awareness to work on a site in the metal recycling sector. This will lead to improved health and safety in the workplace and reduce the risk of accidents occurring on site.

Digital credential system

Authenticated by a Pearson VUE test and evidenced via ProFile, CIWM’s new digital credential system, health and safety competency can be validated on arrival at site via a unique QR code. The MRCCS test, along with digital validation, has been designed to significantly reduce the onsite health and safety induction meaning the job at hand gets underway faster and contractors are on site for less time.

The card is suitable for anyone working on a site as a contractor, for example, plant maintenance, welders and fabricators, electricians, roofers, garden and grounds maintenance and security personnel.

By adopting this scheme, the metals recycling industry standardises the process and can ensure compliance across the sector.

The test

The test itself involves a series of multiple-choice questions linked to possible situations that may arise on a metal recycling site.

There are two MRCCS tests to choose from:

  • Contractor – Operative Test
  • Contractor – Supervisory Test

Each test costs just £110 per person and can be done at any Pearson VUE site in the UK. The digital card can be presented at any metals recycling site in the UK and assists those operating metal recycling yards, hiring, or welcoming contractors on site to quickly identify those competent to operate safely.

To continue to demonstrate their competence, individual contractors are required to take a test every three years.

E-learning

CIWM has developed two e-learning revision guides to help contractors prepare for their test. The e-learning revision aims to enhance knowledge of key information regarding safe and effective working practices at metal recycling sites. The lessons will help to demonstrate knowledge by completing the course and answering quiz questions, preparing contractors for their Metal Recycling Contractor Competency Scheme (MRCCS) Test.
