Steve Walker of service member, Howden, tells us about his role

Name: Steve Walker

Job title: Client Director at Howden

Time spent in your current role: Over 30 years.

What does your job involve?
I look after an account of clients, many in the metal and vehicle recycling industries. However, I am always looking for any new clients who may need help with their insurance covers. I also head up our schemes for the recycling industry which involves working closely with insurers and the BMRA amongst others.

What is the hardest part of your job?
Paperwork and compliance. I’d rather be out there getting my hands dirty, metaphorically speaking; meeting people is the best part.

What three things help you to do your job better?
Great colleagues helping me in the back office and keeping me on the straight and narrow, good relations with insurers, and lastly, feeling part of your Industry, which really gets under your skin.

What are you most proud of in your career?
Building up a large client bank and enjoying an amicable relationship with them all (hopefully), and surviving and thriving in a competitive market place.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
Listen. You have two ears and one mouth, use them in that order.

Quick fire round:

  • Out on the town or a night in front of the TV? On the town. I love a quiet drink!
  • Coffee or tea? Tea, I’m an Englishman.
  • Winter or Summer? Summer, I like to get to the seaside on my scooters.
  • Marmite – Love/Hate? Hate, even the look of it
  • Invisibility or Flying? Flying. It beats getting stuck on motorways on a regular basis.
