Two SWM Recycling employees tell us about their life on the yard.

Name: Brynley Floyde

Job title: Vehicle Recycling and Parts, Depot Manager, Bideford, SWM Recycling

Time spent in recycling: c13 years

What does your job involve?

I am part of the SWM Senior Management Team; my main role is the management and leadership of the Bideford Depot to ensure we meet our business goals and in doing so, we work

safely and in compliance with our site permit and the standards that govern our industry.
I hold a WAMITAB qualification and also focus on sales of car parts, salvage vehicles, and E salvage contracts. I enjoy working with customers, whether offering the best possible price for their end-of-life vehicle, helping them to salvage a car or providing green car parts.

What is the hardest part of your job?

There never seems to be enough hours in the working day!

What three things help you to do your job better?

  1. The authority and opportunity to approve things independently so that customer’s needs are met.
  2. Support from colleagues.
  3. Training that helps us all deliver a best in class service.

What are you most proud of in your career?

I am proud to be a Depot Manager and to have worked my way up through the ranks. I have learnt a lot and am always willing to learn more and look forward to new opportunities in the future within the company.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Make sure you’re very good at what you do, and you’re going somewhere!!!

Name: Kate Westcott

Job title: Transport Supervisor, SWM Recycling

Time spent in recycling: 4 years

What does your job involve?

My daily jobs include coordinating the drivers’ work for the day, scheduling vehicle inspections, liaising with customers & assisting the Transport Manager.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Making sure all our customers are kept happy and are serviced efficiently, which means I have to keep a cool head through busy spells and juggle the challenges of traffic and road conditions (we are in a tourist area and the holiday traffic can prove difficult at times).

What three things help you to do your job better?

  1. 1. The work banter, a happy atmosphere rubs off on our customers.
  2. 2. Team atmosphere (one team, one dream) everyone working towards the same goal makes things run much smoother.
  3. 3. Up to date technology, each driver has a tablet which scans/pictures every skip we have - this is brilliant for keeping track of everything.

What are you most proud of in your career?

The company has been very supportive and given me a range of training to help me gain a broader understanding of the transport & waste recycling industry. In September 2016 I gained a Transport Managers CPC qualification and I consider this to be my greatest achievement yet, alongside passing my HGV Class II.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Forget the mistake, remember the lesson.  Over the last 4 years I’ve learnt so much. I’ve made mistakes along the way, but the more I made, the more I learnt.
