BMRA is sad to announce the deaths of Michael Pownall and Phillip Brown.

Michael Pownall

Michael Pownall died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of 23 July following a long battle with Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease. Michael was 79.

Michael and his brother John ran the McIntyre group of companies based in Nottingham. He later founded Nottingham Metal Recyclers, which at its peak had a turnover of over £60 million and employed 160 people. More latterly he was involved in the scrap metal machinery business with J.McIntyre Machinery Ltd and JMC Recycling Systems Ltd. JMC continues to operate selling equipment worldwide through his sons Phillip and David, and daughter Sally.

Michael was a former president of the BSMA and one of the main focuses of his presidency was to change the name of the association - because there is “nothing Secondary about the scrap metals industry”. He was also a regular attendee of BIR conferences and was well known for his loud shirts, ties and socks!
