SYSTRA - an independent market research company - are conducting an online survey on behalf of the Environment Agency to get your views on waste crime.

Waste crime costs the economy in England an estimated £1 billion per year – that’s the same as the combined starting salary of over 38,000 newly-qualified nurses. Waste crimes are committed when people don't deal with waste in accordance with the law, for example: running a waste site without a permit; the illegal export of waste and large-scale illegal dumping. We know that waste criminals are often involved in other types of offending such as drugs, firearms, and human trafficking.

The Environment Agency works to stop waste criminals impacting on our environment and communities, the legitimate waste management industry, and the economy. By completing the survey you will be helping the Environment Agency better understand the scale and impact of waste crime, design better interventions, and understand the effectiveness of action taken by the Environment Agency and their partners. The results of the survey will help the Environment Agency combat waste crime and support legitimate businesses.
Stopping waste criminals protects your environment, your land, your business

Last time the survey was run, in 2021, it was found that waste crime was perceived to be widespread - 18% of waste was estimated to have been illegally managed, but only 25% of waste crime incidents were estimated to have been reported to the Environment Agency.

With your insight, experiences, and knowledge, we can build a better intelligence picture that helps us stop waste criminals faster.
