The BMRA has 270 members comprising of metal recyclers, some based internationally, and service members. Members are varying sizes, handling varying types of metal with a range of processing capabilities from collecting to shredding.
We spoke with Donna Rogers of Rogers Metal Management LLP about their membership of BMRA. Rogers Metal Management LLP (RMM) is based in the village of Nuneham Courtenay, five miles south of Oxford. Founded in 1970 by Terry Rogers, the business is now in the second generation, run by Simon and Donna Rogers.

RMM’s focus is processing non-ferrous metals. It has been a member of the BMRA following its formation in 2001 and prior to that had been a member of the precursor trade association, the British Secondary Metals Association (BSMA) since 1985.
As a Small Medium Enterprise (SME), it joined in order to be supported through the ongoing list of compliance and policy reforms as well as using the BMRA’s inhouse team of technical, policy and communications specialists to provide them with a voice amongst policy makers and parliamentarians.
Donna said: “As the industry faced the reform of the SMDA in 2013, the BMRA played a key role, steering the legislation to work in a practical sense. The bulletins sent through to us throughout this time enabled us to take action to prepare the business for these changes well in advance of the reform. The work done by the BMRA is ongoing as uncontrollable external issues continue to make an impact on the industry.”
RMM has contacted the BMRA over the years for professional advice on regulatory issues and licensing, and Donna says that they have received great support.

She added: “We have found the BMRA to have been outstanding in their delivery of information throughout the pandemic. Armed with up-to date, relevant and thorough information was, and continues to be, distributed to us in real time has enabled us to operate safely and confidently. It was a massive kudos for the industry to be recognised as key workers!”
“Being run by members for members, the BMRA is an association that understands the challenges faced by the industry in regards to key operational issues such as regulatory bodies and compliance. As a member of the BMRA, we have gained access to opportunities
that would have been restricted to larger multinational companies. These include the Apprenticeship Programme, training and industry specific workshops.”
Donna is also a member of the Membership and Communications Committee. This is a group made up of member companies that supports the Secretariat on a number of items including events like the Golf Day and the Annual Dinner.
“I have enjoyed being a part of the Membership and Communications Committee. It has provided me with an opportunity for personal development through being actively involved in the committee; helping shape the association for the future, whilst networking and working alongside a likeminded team that understands this industry and the challenges we face.
“I would encourage any members interested in making a contribution towards shaping the BMRA for the future to consider joining one of
the committees. I have found my experience to be greatly rewarding – in particular when a project you have been involved in comes to life!”
