Automet

Name: Krystian Nortier

Job title: Site Operative, Automet

Time spent in recycling: 9 years

What does your job involve?

Training yard operators in sorting out steel for furnace and keeping the yard clean.

Training yard operators using the magnet machines. Sorting out loads and unloading waggons.

Sorting and placing materials on racks/shelves or bins according to organisational standards. And best of all, I sort post metal ferrous and non-ferrous for resale and distribution using my trusty magnet.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Super-hot days stuck in the grab with rubbish air-con!

What three things help you to do your job better?

Good hard-working lads on the sub team. Reliable machinery and walkie talkies are a must, and a good selection of podcasts make my job a lot easier.

What are you most proud of in your career?

I don’t think it’s helpful to stand around admiring your own achievements or patting myself on the back. Pride is the enemy of progress.

What are the best and worst things about the metals recycling sector?

The best things are the cool machinery and interesting processes such as seeing the furnace production. Worst is oil and dusty dross exposure.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

To listen more than you speak, God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason. Also be mindful of the company you keep.

Quick fire round:

Out on the town or a night in front of the TV? Night in with the family.

Coffee or tea? Both, coffee mornings, tea evenings.

Winter or Summer? Winter because its Christmas time 😊.

Marmite – Love/Hate? Hate, awful stuff.

Invisibility or Flying? Invisibility, hello CIA archives.
