30 April 2024

Following the success of its inaugural workshop on fighting fires in the scrap metal industry, BMRA is pleased to announce that a second workshop will be held on 30 April.

The workshop will be based on a new offering developed by BMRA partner Packattack. The solution comprises learning how to effectively audit any site, how to empower a site’s responsible persons to identify specific steps that can be put in place to help reduce fires and, importantly implement a process to tackle fires on different sites when they do occur. Known as Zero-2-Five-20, this process leads to responsible persons understanding the importance of identifying a fire in two minutes, having trained staff and systems in place within five minutes and holding the fire for 20 minutes until the fire services arrive.

“Given the ever-increasing number of fires caused by lithium-type batteries we are seeing across the sector, training has become more important than ever. Operators need to feel confident they can safely start tackling these fires straight away rather than waiting for the fire service to arrive, which may not be soon enough to prevent the fire spreading. This is especially true of lithium-type fires that burn so intensely,” said Antonia Grey, BMRA’s lead on batteries and fires.

Hosted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service at their Hampshire HQ (Eastleigh), the workshop will be suitable for all employees on the ground from operatives to site managers to business owners. The cost to attend will be £200 + VAT per person. If you have any questions or are interested in attending, please contact Antonia. [email protected]

West Midlands
Recognising that this is an issue that affects members across the country, the BMRA will endeavour to repeat this training in other locations. In the first instance, we are looking at hosting the next one in the West Midlands during the summer. Again, if you are interested in this session, please contact Antonia clearly stating that you are interested in the West Midlands training.
