A case study from BMRA energy partner, Enexus

A UK metal recycler faced high energy demands and complex contracts across multiple suppliers. Its portfolio of electricity meters was serviced by several suppliers with various contract end dates.

BMRA energy partner, Enexus, streamlined its electricity portfolio to a single supplier with unified end dates, securing over £300,000 in annual savings compared to renewals from their incumbents.

Several sites were expected to see a significant change in consumption profiles in the coming years, which could create volume tolerance issues. Enexus were able to implement contracts that had no volume tolerance clauses, which allows each site to use as little or as much energy as required, without the potential for expensive volume tolerance breach penalties.

Standing charges have become more onerous in all UK commercial energy contracts due to Ofgem’s Target Charge Review (TCR). In this metal recyclers instance a particular site had a large variance in standing charge offers from suppliers.  After a thorough investigation, they were able to secure a contract with a standing charge that was an approximate saving of a further £219,000 per annum compared to the market.

A gas contract review resulted in a 59% cost reduction for the 2023–2025 period, delivering significant long-term savings.

As part of its member benefit offering, all BMRA members can get a free energy audit from Enexus which includes:

  • Desktop survey of energy efficiency
  • Contract structure review
  • Price review
  • Availability capacity review (most businesses pay too much for availability and by streamlining this, can save almost immediately)
  • Green/Net Zero options
