Mr Deed will discuss how the industry and the Environment Agency can work together to enable a more proportionate, risk-based regulatory framework.
11.00 am Digital Waste Tracking
Jake Kingsley, Operational Readiness Lead, Defra
Jake Kingsley, Operational Readiness Lead, Defra will discuss Digital Waste Tracking (DWT). His presentation will cover the role of DWT in reducing crime and driving efficiency and sustainability, the benefits to the metals recycling sector, the importance of implementation, and how metal recyclers can access the system.

11.50 am National Infrastructure Crime Reduction Partnership – Targeting infrastructure crime
Robin Edwards, Onis Consulting
Robin Edwards of Onis Consulting and the project lead for the National Infrastructure Crime Reduction Partnership (NICRP), will discuss where the review of the SMDA is, enforcement of the Act and training for police officers, local authorities and yards.
12.20 pm Metals Recycling General Operative Apprenticeship
Antonia Grey, BMRA
Skills England has announced its intention to retire the only sector-specific apprenticeship due to low uptake. To secure its future, the apprenticeship needs a minimum cohort of 25 learners. Antonia will explain what your company can do to support the future of the apprenticeship.

Andrew Fellows and Mark Ralston, West Midlands Fire Service Training and Business Educational Safety Team
Sadly, there are 1,200 fires in the wider waste industry, with fire services attending lithium-ion battery fires every five hours. This presentation will discuss the importance of your Fire Prevention Plan, your fire training, and the key pointers when a fire starts.
1.50 pm Permitting reviews – what members should expect
Paul Fernee, Team Leader - Hazardous Waste Transfer & Treatment and Metal Recycling, and Andy Bee - Metals Recycling sector lead, Environment Agency
Environment Agency colleagues Paul Fernee and Andy Bee will discuss the drivers for regulatory change in the metals recycling industry. This session is expected to include key updates and discussion on the repeal of the T9 exemption and a wider review of metals recycling permitting (including dust and water abatement), and the new carriers and brokers regime.
