Three changes to the support being offered to businesses

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced three changes to the support being offered to businesses affected by coronavirus restrictions.

Firstly, the Job Support Scheme will be amended so that employer contributions to the hours not worked will reduce from 33 percent as originally planned to just five percent. Moreover, the number of hours an employee needs to work to be eligible to enter the Job Support Scheme has been reduced from 33 percent to 20 percent of their hours

Secondly, the coronavirus grant system for businesses in any tier has been increased - even if they are not forced to close by law. This will see businesses being eligible for cash grants of up to £2,100 a month. However, this is primarily for businesses in the hospitality, accommodation and leisure sectors.

Finally, Government contributions for the self-employed will be increased, with a doubling of income support from 20 percent to 40 percent of people's income, which increases the maximum grant to £3,750.
