ICD Europe

Name: Haydn Dernley

Job title: Material Tester, ICD Europe

Time spent in your current role: 6 years

What does your job involve?

My role as a tester at ICD Europe involves sorting and segregating materials based on chemical composition and forms, identifying any contaminants such as attachments, inserts and coatings. The identification of materials and their contaminants is a crucial step as this not only gives the commercial team the information needed to deal with suppliers but also ensures the correct processing methods take place to remove contaminants and prepare materials to the highest standards for our customers.

What is the hardest part of your job?

Being a tester comes with its challenges. The ability to thrive under pressure and keep up with the pace of the industry while maintaining 100% accuracy isn't for everyone. At ICD Europe we deal with a vast array of materials from nickel and cobalt superalloys to minor metals such as Hafnium, Tantalum, Rhenium and Molybdenum so having an in-depth knowledge on all thing's metals is critical to be successful in my role.

What three things help you to do your job better?

Access to good equipment, knowledge and a strong dedicated team of colleagues, and ICD Europe has all three!

What are you most proud of in your career?

I'd say it's still early days in terms of my career, but I have just spent the last 7 months gaining a diploma in management and leadership through the Chartered Management Institute. I'm a big believer in continuous development, so I'm always looking to the future for opportunities to develop my skills and knowledge.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Don't dwell on regrets but always learn from your mistakes.
