Training: In 2019 the BMRA launched electric car dismantling awareness training with CarTakeBack.

Updated Health & Safety Manual and accompanying site safety posters: The BMRA has relaunched its sector-specific Health and Safety Manual. The Manual, which has been an invaluable resource for members, will be accompanied by a new set of posters focusing on the key Health and Safety issues found on metal recycling sites. 

BMRA’s health and safety offering has been developed to help its members ensure their sites are a safe space in which to operate.  Working with experts in the field, BMRA has updated the Manual to ensure it takes account of changes in legislation and wider health and safety practices.

Water overcharges: It is estimated that as much as £10m p.a. has been levied incorrectly to recycling companies for surface drainage. Cadantis Forensics has uncovered a culture of huge systematic overcharging in the UK Water Industry and are proactively working to correct and reverse the trend.

Cadantis Forensics run a full forensic investigation and enter appeals for its clients backed up by a full inhouse legal and policy team. Get involved: The BMRA has a number of committees including the Legal and Policy Group and Membership and Communications Committee, that ordinary members are able to sit on as vacancies become available. 

Exclusive membership events: Each year the BMRA hold exclusive member events. These include the AGM and Golf day, typically held in June, and the Annual Dinner, preceeded by a free networking event, in November. There are other events across the year including tours, for example race days and a trip to the London Metal Exchange.

Promote yourself to fellow members: Members can use BMRA communication channels to share their news with fellow members. Current channels include:

  • Scrapbook: Published every two months, there is the opportunity to purchase a full-page exclusive A4 advert. Scrapbook is distributed to every member site and key industry stakeholders and MPs. Access to Service Members: Many of whom provide specialist services for the scrap metal and metals recycling industry. 

Advertise your equipment, jobs and wanted items: Members are able to advertise equipment sales and job adverts, as well as wanted adverts via BMRA's digital channels. The individual, text-based listings will be hosted on dedicated pages on the recyclemetals.org website and will be promoted via bulletins and social media.

Help the future of Metals Recycling: The first sector-specific apprenticeship was launched, the Metal Recycling General Operative. It is a level 2 apprenticeship as well as the level 5  Metal Recycling Technical Manager. They are open to employees of any age and is a 12-18-month assessment covering a number of industry areas that reflect the complexities faced by those working in metals recycling. Those in your company who are under 35 can join the Young British Metals Recyclers (YBMR). It gives members a helpful resource by providing learning and development along with bespoke training that can enhance their own reputation within the company that they work, develop their customer relationships and improve their career progression.
